random notes from brainstorm session for a generic system but mainly about guns because obviously

March 16th, 2009
  • When there’s discussion of realistic (or rather, cinematically gritty) gunfights, I just cannot help but drift the conversation into John Woo territory.
  • I just really can’t help myself.
  • I should see more actual John Woo, rather than just know him by homage.
  • If you want gun-fu aesthetics in a gun fight, maybe you should just really be using the equivalent of your “melee combat” rules. Your melee weapons just happen to have a rather large range, is all.
  • I love a generic system with enough – but not too many – dials you can tweak, for both genre emulation and for the love of rules-hacking.

John Woo well worth watching for gun ballet (preferably in order)

    1. A Better Tomorrow 1 & 2 (skip 3)
    2. The Killer
    3. Hard Boiled

You may also wish to check out Heroes Shed No Tears for a more brutal B-movie thing and Face Off to see probably his best, and still crippled by Hollywood, movies.
